In the 11th century, from 1001 to 1100, Rome was again starting to attract pilgrims after a period of chaos.
Towards the end of the century, in 1084, the Normans sacked Rome. Wealthy families, notably the Frangipane family and the Pierleoni family, rebuilt the city.
