The 18th century, from 1701 to 1800, saw continued growth in Rome, although the massive renewal programmes had now ended.

At the end of the century, the French Revolution caused upheaval in Europe, and Rome was taken by French forces under Napoleon in 1798. The occupation ended in 1799, but was renewed the next year.
