An atrium is, in church architecture, a colonnaded forecourt to the church. The term originally referred to a similar open court in a Roman house.
Good examples of atria can be seen at San Clemente[1] and San Paolo fuori le Mura[2]. In the picture captions the atria are erroneously identified as cloisters.
