A baldachino is a canopy above the altar in a church. The term may also be used of canopies over the episcopal throne and statues, and of the movable camopy used held over the Blessed Sacrament in processions.

It is sometimes referred to as a ciborium, since it covers the Blessed Sacrament, but this usage does lead to misunderstandings. The term ciborium magnum ("great ciborium") may also be used, and is more clear.
