Beata Celestina Donati is a mid 20th century convent and parochial chapel at Via delle Calasanziane 6 in the Primavalle quarter.
There is no formal dedication, apparently. It belongs to the Scuola Suor Celestina Donati, and is also known as the Cappella Calasanziane.
History[]
Blessed Celestina Donati founded the Figlie Povere di San Giuseppe Calasanzio ("Poor Daughters of St Joseph Calasanz") at Florence in 1889, with the charism of teaching poor girls.
The Rome convent was founded in the 1950's when the suburb of Primavalle was laid out. This was provided with a large chapel, but unfortunately the Figlie Povere have substantially declined in numbers and the convent no longer functions as such. (There are less than a hundred sisters in Italy and Brazil, and only four in the Diocese of Rome).
The chapel is now being used by the parish of San Lino as a Mass centre.
Appearance[]
The chapel amounts to a small church architecturally. It has a single nave of seven bays, and a lower external three-sided apse. The fabric is in brick, mostly rendered in a cream colour.
The façade has an external loggia, above which is a row of three large round-headed windows. The side walls each have six blind naked brick pilasters separating the bays, the middle five of which each have a small vertical rectangular window.
The roof is pitched and tiled. The apse has its own roof, in three pitches.
Liturgy[]
Mass is celebrated on Sundays and Solemnities at 8:00 (not July, August) and 10:00.
