Chiaroscuro

Chiaroscuro (Italian for lightdark) is a method used in painting, sculpture and occasionally architecture to achieve dramatic effects through light and shade.

The method was developed in Italy and Flanders in the 15th century, and was fully developed in Baroque and Mannerist art.
