A portico is a porch or walkway with a roof supported by columns, often leading to the entrance of a building. Porticoes are found on many churches in Rome.
The term narthex is sometimes used about porticoes; this usage is in most cases incorrect since a narthex is a separate room. An exterior narthex is however very similar to a portico.
