Santa Maria Immacolata e S Vincenzo de Paoli is a modern parish church at Via di Tor Sapienza 52, in the suburb of Tor Sapienza on the Via Collatina in the east of the city.

History

The parish is administered by the Lazarist Congregation. The joint dedication is to the Blessed Virgin Mary under her aspect of the Immaculate Conception, and St Vincent de Paul who inspired the foundation of the congregation.

The church was built in 1968 to replace Santa Maria Immacolata alla Cervelletta, which had become too small for its suburbanized parish.

Fabric

Surprisingly for the period, the design is a traditionally Romanesque single-naved church without aisles and with a semi-circular apse attached to a very short presbyterium. The roofs are pitched and tiled. The façade is divided into three zones by four gigantic pilasters running up to the protruding triangular pediment. The central, wider zone is rendered in a light grey, and the flanking ones are in pink brick. The entrance has a triangular pediment matching the main one, and above it is a porthole window. The main pediment contains a papal coat-of-arms.

There is a campanile at the other end of the church, to the right of the apse. It is a low square tower with a concrete frame and pink brick infill, and the concrete pilasters at the corners continue upwards to form the open bell-cage. Each face of this is divided into two vertical rectangles by a short concrete pilaster. The top has a parapet, and a dumpy pyramidal flèche formed by four concrete beams meeting at a point.
